the maze
From my dictionary maze (noun) means ‘a network of paths and hedges designed as a puzzle through which one has to find a way.’ However, if used as a verb it tells us the meaning ‘be dazed and confused.’ The synonyms are labyrinth, entanglement, intricacy, confusion, puzzle, perplexity, , tangle and twist. Did you watch the movie The Maze Runner which was first released in 2014 based on James Dashner's 2009 novel of the same name? A sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, was released on September 18, 2015. The third and final film, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, was released on January 26, 2018. I suggest you watch them on Netflix if you haven’t.
In our lives, you and I are actually journeying through life mazes to reach our destinations. Life mazes come in many forms and complexities. As we mature we are supposed to program ourselves with all the experiences on ‘what works” and ‘what doesn’t’. you are not supposed to repeat the same tasks and operations and expecting different results.
The best way to view a maze is from the bird’s eye view. This is the best view where you can see the entirety of the maze and would definitely be able to draft out your plans and strategies to maneuver through the maze in order to attain the specific success or goals you have set and wanted to achieve within a certain time frame.
A bird's-eye view is an elevated view of an object from above, with a perspective as though the observer were a bird, often used in the making of blueprints, floor plans, and maps.
The problem with us is that we are so comfortable and complacent with using or looking at things from a worm's-eye view, a view of an object from below, as though the observer were a worm. It is the opposite of a bird's-eye view. This inferior worm’s eye view is where you look up to something to make an object look tall, strong, and mighty while the viewer (you) feels childlike or powerless. To make things worse, most of the time we would combine our worm’s eye view with ‘Tunnel Vision.’
Tunnel vision as the name suggests is a condition when your eyes’ field of vision is narrowed down to an extent that you can’t see sideways like you always could (you can if you want to) and without turning your head sideways. It is interesting to note that humans have this thing called ‘selective vision’, ‘selective listening’, ‘selective ability’, and all sorts of selective. If you don’t like to do something even though it brings you more income, you will automatically put on your ‘selective behavior’ that is for example to spend time doing everything else and unnecessary other than the one thing which is important and that can lead you to attain your goal which is ‘better income’, ‘more money’, and ‘increased wealth.’
To avoid procrastination and laziness, I will look at my current goals using the S.M.A.R.T. shared in my earlier chapters and match them with my ‘personality test results.’ If you are yet to set any goals, do it immediately now. Never let the procrastinating virus or lazy bacterium to continue to destroy you. If you just tell me that you will do it tomorrow, then I can assure you that you will NEVER do it. Trust me.
So once you have got your goals written down, and know your strengths and your attitude deficiency, do one more thing. Look at your goals you set last year or last two years. Big goals or small goals it doesn’t matter, as long as it is a goal or target. Once you have done so, write down the one to three main attributes that contribute to you attaining your goal or goals. We all know very well some goals, usually a ‘short term and small goal’ is easier to achieve. One good example is to get up as early as 5:30AM to exercise and to read positive articles or watch a motivating video clip. Thus usually happens after you attended a training or motivational course and was asked by the trainer to do the above. So you are so excited and put them into action. That was your goal. My question is for how long can you sustain this regime. From Friday till the following Thursday?
I congratulate you if you are faithfully and diligently doing it and achieving it for the last seven days (even though most of the time people would only able to do it for the first three days). Never mind that. So tell me what was in your mind and systems for you to have that determination and strong desire to do it? List them down. And what was in your mind when you slowly losing that fire and eventually drop off from the regime you promised yourself earlier? List them down as well. Here are the reasons which I collected from participants from my previous class.
The initial strong desire and determination happen because you were engaging a bird’s eye view and at the same time you were shown how to imagine and visualize the end results of your goals. Usually, when you are in a group, the energy and the positive vibes get on you. And if you don’t keep that momentum, it continues to fade off. This is the most crucial part, when the energy is slowly fading off and you do not know how and when to fill the void, you will lose that focus and the goals you set do not occupy your minds anymore.
You may want to know how do you overcome this or how can you consistently top up the energy and positive vibes because these two elements act as fuel to keep your desire and determination burning.
Before I show you the mechanics, I would like you to read the earlier chapters about S.M.A.R.T. goals and run through the personality test on yourself. I won’t tell you the chapters to read as I am expecting you to read from Chapter 1. After that we shall meet again next Friday to learn the ‘how-to’ and the ‘what to’ as well as the ‘when to.’
